One of the best RED flowering Opuntias from Claude Barr's collection. The rutilas, a diverse wild hybrid group from western Colorado make good garden plants. Slightly flattened, cylindrical stems and deep reddish-pink flowers in June. Compact habit. 6" high by 24" wide. Zone 4. Dry fruit. Sold as rooted pad in 2.5" Pots.
A vigorous strain with internode growth twice the size of the Colorado strain. Very thick stems. Magenta flowers. This plant crests (fasciates) readily. 72" high and wide. Zone 5. Susceptible to damage by heavy snow. Believed to be from West Texas. Sold as unrooted cutting. Now sold in 2.5" pot.
Deep pink flowers in June on a beautiful, dwarf cushion, very choice. Plump, round pads. No spines, tiny glochids. 4" high by 18" wide. Zone 3. Excellent in outdoor containers. (Claude Barr selection, Canada?) Dry fruit. Sold as rooted, 2.5" potted plant or unrooted cuttings (when available.)
Selected near Santa Fe, NM by Allan Taylor. Stems much redder in the winter than the species. It's a beautiful, robust variety that is more upright than other strains. The flower color is a lighter pink than other imbricatas. 60" high by 72" wide. Zone 5. Sold in a 2.5-inch pot.

The Texas Red Yucca is a favorite in our garden. The tubular coral-red flowers are on graceful 4-5 foot high stems from early June through September! It is definitely the hummingbirds' favorite food source. Graceful green foliage turns maroon in winter.
